What type of pet bird would be good for me?

I'm considering getting a pet bird or maybe two (I know some types of birds get sad without a buddy). I know that some types of birds are a big responsibility such as parrots, but I really just want birds that I can watch. I don't really need a bird that plays with you or can speak. I used to know someone who owned finches but I'm not sure what type they were. Any suggestions?
