Why do parents tell their children lies about Santa Claus?

In my opinion they should tell them the truth as soon as the kids are old enough to know the difference between fantasy and reality. Otherwise it's a lie and it can have bad psychological consequences because the kid realizes that adults have been lying to him/her all along. Just my view.
